March, Daylight Savings and Waiting for Spring
Well March came in like a lamb and considering the crazy winds we’re experiencing today, it’s revving up to go out like a lion. We’ve had a lot of rain over the past two weeks as the temperatures warm up in preparation of spring. I roll with each season choosing to find joy even when it’s hot or cold. Of course, I’m also guilty of cussing a really frigid or extremely windy day when I have to go “into the out” to run errands.
Just another windy day in the neighborhood.
One of the things we love most about our location of our home is being able to hear the gulls. It’s something my husband never heard until he moved here from Kansas City. It’s a sound we enjoy because it’s calming. The downside is that we get insanely windy days living so close to the shoreline but we’ve adapted and haven’t had to chase a piece of outdoor furniture in quite a few years. One of the projects we have planned for the yard is a screenhouse and we’re making sure it can stand up to hurricane force winds. The last thing we need is having it lift up and land in a neighbor’s yard. Believe me, it’s happened before….
A few months after moving into our home we were hit by an early summer thunderstorm. The resulting wind coming off the coast pushed the neighbors’ 65 ft. tall tree down crushing our pool fence and laying across all 32 ft. of our pool. By the grace of God it went in that direction missing both homes completely. We never heard it. I had stupidly gone outside to turn the pool pump off as the storm raged. It happened within moments of me getting back into the house. I sent video to my husband, who was at work at the time. He immediately left the office, showing the video to his boss on the way out the door. “I have to go, now. THIS just happened at my house.” When I say we get insane wind, I’m not exaggerating. Thankfully we have wonderful neighbors and we worked together to have the tree removed.
The rain has been good and I’m hopeful that the trend of warmer temperatures continues. It might give us a longer pool season this year since our pool isn’t heated. We thought about having a heater installed but there are other projects that are more important.
I’m over winter and while I’m over the bout with COVID in mid-January, I still feel “off” in many ways. There’s a lingering cough that could be from COVID (but 2 months later?) or early onset of allergies. EVERYTHING is blooming right now. Our magnolia is full of pink buds already. That’s about 2-3 weeks earlier than usual and I’m sure it has to do with the incredibly warm winter so far. It’s a hardy little tree and has managed to survive the winds and the cold for years. It’s my husband’s favorite tree and we hope it lives for a very long time.
Anyone else loathe the switch from standard to daylight saving time? This one snuck up on me and I didn’t even realize it until I woke up Sunday morning at 11AM. Hubby and I are not fans of “losing” an hour. Having more sunlight in the summer is nice but our body clocks are much happier on standard time than DST.
Last year the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act that would make daylight savings time permanent. So far Congress hasn’t passed the bill because there are opponents on each side of it. Those for keeping DST all year long and those who want standard time to be the norm again.
Senator Marco Rubio re-introduced the bill to the 118th Congress hoping once again to pass the bill. It was originally introduced in 2022 with substantial bipartisan support. They say time moves slowly. Time moves like a stockcar at the Indy 500 when compared to our government passing bills. Personally, I want standard time to be permanent but more than that I want time to stop switching twice a year.
Peace,
Nim
