Just Breathe

It's been a week of stunning upsets which have lead to angry but peaceful protests. Welcome to democracy. The country is trying to recover after an election that left voters wondering what happened. Donald Trump is the new President-Elect and will take office on January 20, 2017. The country is split and a class war is raging.I support the rights of Americans to protest the results but my opinion is "Why weren't you protesting throughout the campaign?" Thousands should have taken to the streets each time the man spewed horrific things. But there were no marches. There were no marches because like me millions of voters couldn't imagine the country would elect someone who uttered so many vile things. Color us wrong. The thing that upsets me more than having Donald Trump elected is the fact that people in this country accepted his behavior and his hateful speeches. They ACCEPTED his way. Do NOT look at me and say "Well we couldn't vote for Hillary because blah blah blah". You voted a racist into the white house. What has left me stunned and downright hurt is that 90% of my family voted for this arrogant fool. I'm from a Christian family (I'm the black sheep because I refuse to slam people with my Bible) and I've known each of them to be a devout Christian. Now I can't even bring myself to talk to them.I'm just dumbfounded. But here's the deal. He was elected. I don't like the result but it's the result. And while the hurt lingers I have to shift into a place where I pray that he makes solid decisions for ALL of this country. Decisions that benefit a diverse working class, a melting pot of beliefs and a population that wants to retain their basic human rights. He chanted that he'd "drain the swamp". The swamp wasn't drained. With a few exceptions all of the incumbents will be returning to the Hill. The swamp survived and that swamp is now prepared to drown basic human rights. The Democrats better wake up and realize that they've screwed up as much as the Republicans. They need to stop pointing the finger of blame everywhere but at themselves and Hillary. Yes, Hillary is to blame as well. The Democratic Party lost sight of the "working class" which historically was the group of folks they were supposed to represent. People are so tired of Washington dancing to the tune of lobbyists and Super Pacs that they blindly voted for what they felt was an outsider. But he's not an outsider. He's part of the 1%. He has no idea what it's like to struggle on minimum wage. He's never wanted for anything in his life except maybe hair that behaved. He's not a career politician but you can bet your bottom dollar he's paid for lobbyists to get things done HIS way on the Hill.Democrats better shake it off and get to work for the mid-term elections. They better hit the streets and start talking to people instead of trusting polls and data because Dem voters don't normally show up in droves for the mid-terms.I've written my obligatory "reaction" post. Now I'm moving on, dusting off and figuring out life one day at a time like I've done for 50+ years.
