The Calm Before the Holiday Weekend
Shopping is done. Pool is clean. The kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews have their food assignments for the get-together. This afternoon and evening are mine to read, game and watch TV. Tomorrow, the baking, marinating and housecleaning begins. The house is clean, it’s just not “guest” clean.
If you know, you know.
Tomorrow, I shift into cooking and baking mode, and everyone knows to stay out of the kitchen. But for the rest of today I get to do whatever the heck I want. That means the guys eat leftovers and I get to read, watch my shows and play video games. It’s good to be The Mama, The Gramma, The Aunt and the wife that bakes cupcakes for her husband every holiday. If he had his way I’d be baking cupcakes very week but we’re working on being people that are less fluffy and more healthy.
Since I committed to writing on this blog, I noticed that my posts are choppy. They’re brief and don’t convey who I am as a person let alone a blogger. There’s a part of me that’s overthinking SEO, tags and word count, which goes against the foundation of my personal blog. Every year someone comes out and declares that personal blogs are dead. Pfft, it’s only dead if people want it to be dead. With that said I definitely need to work on my writing, my voice. Sometimes I read my entries and they feel so stand-offish. On this side of the monitor, I am definitely an introvert but in my small circle of friends I’m outgoing and thrive on hosting.
There’s a lot going on in this country. There’s been a lot going on since 2015. A lot of upheaval, strife, opinions, anger etc. Our time together as a family allows us to take a break from all that. There are different opinions on every topic within our tight-knit crew but we don’t allow that to interfere with being a family.
Family is first. It always comes first with us. We may vote differently but our choice of political party doesn’t come before our family bond. There are only four things I’m steadfastly loyal to:
My Lord and Savior
My husband
My family
The Kansas City Chiefs
This weekend will be filled with gratefulness for those who fought to turn 13 colonies into the democracy we have today. It will be filled with laughter, wine , BBQ and a whole lot of dessert. We’re a dessert lovin’ crew for sure. And it will be filled with a lot of Magic the Gathering games because we are now and will forever be a bunch of nerds.
I love these nerds with all my heart.
Peace,
Nim
