The Nature of Secrets - Finley O'Sullivan Series | Thoughts
Finally finished The Nature of Secrets by Debra Webb. This is the second book in the Finley O’Sullivan series with a third set to publish at the end of the year. I won a Kindle copy through a giveaway on Goodreads and decided to read book one before diving into it.
This story was a page turner for me and happily, I didn’t figure out the villain until the reveal. The story follows Finley O’Sullivan, a lawyer turned investigator due to events in her personal life. She works for her godfather Jack Finnegan at his law firm. Jack has his own demons to deal with as a recovering alcoholic.
Ellen Winthrope, a self-made millionaire businesswoman hires the Finnegan law firm to represent her after her husband is murdered in their home. With all the evidence seemingly tied up in a neat little bow, she feels confident that she won’t even be charged with murder, much less need their services for a court case and yet here she is. But what Ellen doesn’t count on is Finley’s doggedness when investigating the crime. Bit by bit, Finley pieces together the truth behind the murder and the real culprits all while dealing with new information about her own husband’s murder.
Webb weaves a great tale with intriguing characters with very interesting backstories. For me, this second book is superior to the first and I can’t wait to read the next in the series. I really like Finley O’Sullivan and her dynamic with her boss and godfather, Jack, her mother, The Judge, her nurturing father and her best friend, Matt. Finley is intelligent, strong, broken and determined. You want to see her win. You want to see her find happiness again.
I’m going to have to check out this author’s other series eventually. While she’s not a cozy mystery writer, this series wasn’t filled with graphic violence or sex. It does have profanity but it’s not overwhelming. I read a review or two on Goodreads and Amazon claiming the first book was loaded with profanity. I think “loaded” is an overstatement. Is there profanity? Yes, but it’s mild compared to other books. For those who don’t want any in their reads, avoid it. If you can tolerate a bit, this story will be a great addition to your suspense library.
