D.I. Ray

Have you watched the series D.I. Ray? Created and written by Maya Sondhi and produced by Jed Mecurio, the British police procdural that aired on ITV back in 2022. It premiered here in the states on February 20, 2023 on the PBS Masterpiece Channel available on Prime Video as well as the PBS app for viewers with PBS Passport. I finally got around to watching the four episodes in series/season 1 and it’s fantastic. I am a huge fan of U.K. dramas and have active subscriptions to AcornTV and Britbox. AcornTV has a larger library of crime/msytery/police drams than Britbox in my opinion, but both are amazing streaming services and well worth their subscription fees.

D.I. Rachita Ray is a newly promoted detective in the homicide and is excited to lead her first investigation. But that excitement quickly fades when she is informed the case could be an honor killing and she realizes she is merely a token hire. I watched the series in one sitting. It’s nice to be retired. For me it’s a hit even though at first I felt that Ray, played by Parminder Nagra, could have been more expressive. Her character felt very detached from everything, including her fiancé.

This changes however when she becomes involved with D.S. Tony Khatri. Then we see Rachita open up but it’s not meant to be. Khatri is gunned down in Rachita’s doorway. DI Ray then faces a flurry of emotions as she works to not only solve the current case but also the murder of a member of her team, the man for whom she’s developed feelings

A 6-episode, second season was confirmed in November of 2022 with filming for that season to begin sometime this year.
