Getting Parade Ready

My church is getting ready to start work on their parade float for our town’s annual Septemberfest. This year we’re carrying the theme from our successful VBS through to the float. That means many of the decorations have been created so we just need to set them up on the float trailer. This is my first year helping out and I came up with and idea for something to pass out during the parade walk. After running it by the Pastor’s wife, I got started.

The image to the left is from an afternoon of printing card stock. Thank goodness my husband was around to help me. We used our home laser printer which has worked well for years but, you can’t load a stack of card stock and set it to print 100 sheets like I need. I’m sure my hubby told me why we can’t do it that way but I can’t remember the reason. So he sat at my PC in our home office and set up the print queue while I fed the card stock into the printer.

When we finished I stared cutting out the individual cards with a tiny cutter like this one we got on Amazon for $11.

He was using it to cut out minis for our tabletop adventures. I think we’re at the point where we need to buy a guillotine style paper cutter/trimmer. He uses it frequently and even I have need of one when I don’t want to break out the vinyl cutter for straight cuts.

Once I got all the cards cut, I punched two holes in each. That was a quicker task than printing and cutting and I’m thankful for that.

The holes are to accommodate a lollipop. They usually toss candy from the float, which they might still do, but I thought this was a cool idea because it carries the main Bible verse for our theme with each handout.

10. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
— Ephesians 2:10 NIV

They felt a bit empty so I started to decorate the cards. That went wonderfully until my 5 year old paint pens started to empty. Easy enough fix though because I decided to just decorate half of them. There are 400 ready to head to church. Wendy said that the volunteers could cut them out on our “work” day but I’m retired so i did everything so that all they have to do is add the lollies. This means more hands freed up to get other things done. Will most of the cards end up in the trash? Maybe but we’re here to spread the Gospel. I leave the destination of these cards to the Lord. My hands and paint pens did their work in service to Him and that’s a privilege. It’s also nice to feel useful again.

For the first time in a long time, I’m looking forward to hanging out at the Septemberfest. The park is about a mile from our home so we typically just walk there. Since COVID cancelling the first year, we haven’t gone back. It’s going to be a great time out with my family, and my church family. I’m praying for beautiful Fall temperatures that day.

Time to clear off the craft tables and get started on some Fall items!

Peace,

Nim
