Mother's Day 2020

It was a quiet Mother’s Day. More quiet than usual thanks to stay-at-home orders here in New Jersey but I’m not complaining. Had a bad bout of acid reflux last night so I spent a good portion of the wee hours on the couch watching Dateline ID and playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. When I felt like the medicine kicked in I shuffled back to bed and didn’t crawl out until 2 pm Sunday. The best part of this is zero guilt because my kids are all grown. Though waking at 2 pm has its downside if I go nocturnal. I’ve been on a really good sleep schedule lately and I want to stick to it. Should be fine if I drag my backside to bed in a few hours from now.

Dan brought me flowers for Mother’s Day. it’s been his thing for five years now. I tell them all that they don’t have to get me anything. And if they don’t call or don’t bring a gift I don’t guilt them for a year. They show me they appreciate and love me throughout the year. One of the things we all despise is the commercialism of everything in this day and age. It’s all driven by the jewelry, candy, card and flower industries making people feel obligated to “Show her you care!” Pfft. I don’t need a $6 card with a flowery poem.

But I do love the flowers and vases my youngest picks out for me every year. Purple is one of my favorite colors and roses are my favorite flower. J decided to order Cracker Barrel for dinner and have it delivered since that’s a thing now. Can’t beat Cracker Barrel Sunday chicken on Mother’s Day. Heck you can’t beat it any day! I was sad they didn’t have macaroni and cheese as a selection for sides but we muddled through. The picnic box provided enough for lunch and dinner! Yay for good cooking that I didn’t have to make and at an affordable price!

Got a call from the oldest for Mother’s Day. He called about 15 minutes after J ordered food and I felt so bad because he wanted to buy me dinner and have it delivered! He was even thinking about Cracker Barrel! Great minds think a like apparently and I told him it was the thought that counted. We chatted for a solid hour and it was good to talk to him. He’s tired of the quarantine stuff. He says he just wants to be able to grab a beer or dinner with a friend when he wants.

Bud, that’s what we all want to do. He has it tougher than the rest of the family because he lives alone. Because of his work hours and commute he won’t get a dog because it would be unfair to both of them. So we all try to check in with him as much as possible.

Yeah, it’s a new way of normal as the state eases its way into re-opening but it’s doubtful the company both J and P work for will be bringing them back to their offices any time soon. They’ve both heard that the company doesn’t care what the Governors say about re-opening, they’re goal is to keep their employees safe. Thankfully they work in an industry that allows them to work from home. We’re blessed in that aspect.

Another Mother’s Day in the books. This is my 34th and I’m grateful for everyone I can add to the book.

Peace,

Bet a.k.a. Nim
