Good Morning

First blog post after dusting off and updating my Squarespace account! Adding the exclamation point feels wrong somehow since it’s 4:30 a.m. and I’m sitting in front of my computer in my pajamas. It’s not exactly exciting. It’s quiet in the house and I can hear the birds beginning to chatter outside. It will remain like this until a neighborhood car with a loud muffler meanders down the street around 5:15. When that car appeared on the scene it would wake me up Monday through Friday until I adjusted to the sound. Its still annoying but I’m not going to complain. They’ve got to get to work and that’s the vehicle they drive.

Though I’d prefer to be asleep right now I do enjoy watching the sun rise. Warm, golden light breaks through the copse of trees behind the house and the lush greenery of a new season comes into view. This is my paradise. A paradise I used to believe was far away from the small town where I was raised. Now, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Seriously. I did the “where would we live if we had stupid money” thing. All comes back to how much I love this house and this town. So I’m just blooming where God planted me oh so many decades ago.

J and I got our 2nd round of the Pfizer COVID vaccine on Wednesday morning. After hearing about the side effects that my oldest son experienced, we were prepared to just veg for two days. After getting our shots we stopped at the grocery store for some easy meals before heading home. The same night I had some soreness at the site of the shot, just like I did with the first round, but that was it. No fatigue or body aches. Hubby said he felt like a truck hit him, backed up and then hit him again. He went to bed early that night and spent all of Thursday experiencing body aches, chills, headache and fatigue. Me? I was bouncing around the house like normal. The pain in my arm went away overnight. Just goes to show how everyone has different reactions

Our youngest son was vaccinated months ago because he’s an essential worker. He was given the J&J vaccine and it knocked him down for 3 days. It’s not like he had a choice. His employer provided the vaccine on site and it’s what was first available in our area. I knew I was going to hold out for either Moderna or Pfizer.

Restrictions have started to ease up all over the country. Some states are even ending the iindoor and outdoor mask requirement for fully vaccinated people. How many people are going to lie and say they’ve been vaccinated just so they don’t have to wear a mask? Sad to think that way but it’s also a valid thought. I’m fine with wearing a mask and at this point might continue the practice during flu season from here on out. Cases of flu and cold are DOWN with all the mask wearing. It’s a mask. It’s not violating my Constitutional rights. insert hard eye roll right here

At least we’re moving in the right direction and the daily death toll is dropping but it’s not over and COVID isn’t going away any time soon. Hopefully people will remain vigilant so that even flu seasons will see decreased spread. Wishful thinking. It’s right up there with hoping that one day I’ll be able to turn on the news and actually hear news.

We stopped watching cable news altogether last year. I watch the local news affiliate in the evenings like I did before cable news hit the scene. Other than that I check NPR online. I want the news, not hour after hour of opinion television where everyone talks about how the other cable news networks are fake news. One day people will wake up and realize that all of the networks sensationalize things to drive up their ratings. Higher ratings mean more sponsors and more sponsors mean more money. It’s all about money.

When we first stopped watching I looked into getting a newspaper subscription. The newspaper website for subscriptions pushed a digital subscription while making it nearly impossible to sign up for home delivery. I’m tech saavy but I don’t want to sit in front a screen for everything in my life. I just want to sit on my patio, sip my coffee and read a physical newspaper. And before you ask, no I’m not attached at the hip to my mobile phone. Our kids still ask, “Why didn’t you answer the phone when I called?” And our reply remains the same: “If you want to get through to us call us on the landline. We don’t carry our phones with us all around the house.” I should call it a camera instead of a mobile phone because that’s how they’re being marketed. “You need this new model of “phone” because it now has 117 cameras in it!”

And on that note I’m going to head to the kitchen and make breakfast for my man before he has to face his long commute from the dining room to the office. By office I mean the home office we had to create when COVID lockdown orders went into place. It’s still an office because in October of last year corporate decided he was going to permanently work from home. It’s been an adventure let me tell you. I’ll save that for another time.
