Those Who Wish Me Dead | Movie Night
Last night we watched Those Who Wish Me Dead on HBO Max.
What made us watch?
Angelina Jolie
Jon Bernthal
Directed by Taylor Sheridan
Additional cast is just as good. When we skim over movies we check Rotten Tomatoes for the scores. We don’t dismiss a movie strictly on scores. We might love movies that others dislike and vice versa. For instance Wonder Woman 1984 got a 74% with the audience. J and I watched 17 minutes and 34 seconds of that movie before turning it off. It goes into the bin with Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
I feel dirty just typing out the title of that movie. Ugh.
Those Who Wish Me Dead kept us on the edge of our seats from the start. I personally love that we never learn who was after Owen or why. It was refreshing that the ending wasn’t a neat little package with all the ends tied into a bow. In this movie, Hannah (Angelina Jolie) and Connor (Finn Little) rescue each other. I’ve read that people didn’t like the plot or that the plot was missing. Others said that the movie wasn’t what the title eluded to but I disagree.
Connor is on the run from men who want him dead. They want him dead because of what his father uncovered. Hannah is questioning her life and the choices she made during a fire a year before. In that fire several boys lost their lives and she is carrying the weight of those deaths. I think Hannah wishes herself dead because she suffers from survivor’s guilt. We know that Jolie will always give us a stellar performance but we were incredibly impressed with young actor, Finn Little. The interactions between Hannah and Connor are emotional and strong.
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t comment on the wonderful performance from Medina Senghore as Allison. I was literally cheering when a very pregnant Allison fought her way out of being captured, tracked her husband down and took out one of the assassins. Her moments with her dying husband, Jon Bernthal, show her strength and grit. I get giddy when women characters are written strong, gritty and capable.
As for the bad guys, oh my goodness. Their level of evil made me wince. Aiden Gillen is one of my favorite bad guy actors and he took this one to a new level. I’m familiar with Nicholas Hoult because of the TV series The Greaton Hulu.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
