Last Weekend
We hadn’t seen the grandkids since Easter because my son was working insane hours out of state. We’re used to getting together once a month to catch up with each other and enjoy a good meal.

I happened to get lucky and find a small brisket of food quality at BJ’s several weeks ago and smoked it for our dinner. It fed the 8 of us with a couple slices to spare. This brisket was smoked using Myron Mixon’s method, basic rub and beef injection recipes. The result was delicious but we’re fans of Kansas style smoked brisket.
It was a great afternoon and we got to try out our son’s VR headset. I am completely addicted to Beat Saber but J and I agree that there aren’t enough games on the Occulus Quest to warrant buying one for ourselves. I hope they develop more for it. The other thing that keeps us from buying one is the Facebook login requirement.
We deleted our FB accounts and have no desire to ever return. J has been without FB since 2017. I deleted mine over a year ago and we’ve existed happily without it. If Facebook decides to close your account, you’re unable to log in and use your VR. I’m sure it would take a lot to have your account closed by FB but do I want to spend $500 on a system that’s tied to Facebook? Absolutely not. I’m torn about deleting my Instagram account since that platform is tied to Facebook as well. At least you’re not forced to have an FB account in order to use your Insta account. The day that happens is the day I delete and move on.
After the shenanigans of last weekend with extended family due to images I posted on Instagram I’m so very close to deleting the account altogether. I posted photos the brisket as well as the food I cooked for our dinner last Sunday. A dinner for On Friday my middle son and I were chatting and he mentioned getting a message from his cousin while playing WoW. The message said, “So I guess your Mom is mad at us?” My son told him he had no idea what he was talking about but he got radio silence in return. Within 15-20 minutes of posting images of our Sunday meal, I got a text from my nephew,
“So we’re not invited to stuff anymore?”
Before I could reply, he sent a text to my oldest son like the one sent to my middle son. We sat around the living room stunned. I responded that there wasn’t any “stuff” for Memorial Day weekend. We were having our regular get together with the kids and grandkids. Again, crickets, radio silence, no reply. Then again we haven’t heard from them in nearly 3 months. I post an image of a brisket and suddenly he’s offended.
Pardon me?
Just so you know, my nephew and his wife are 40 and 41 years old. Take a moment to let that tidbit sink in. As adults why did they choose to act like 12 year old kids with texts to my sons? Why not be adult and talk to me directly if you thought I was mad. I’m not by the way. We had exactly ONE Memorial Day BBQ the year we bought our house. We were excited because the house came with an inground pool. So we had a BBQ. I don’t normally do Memorial Day BBQs. They weren’t bothered in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 or 2020. I’ll give them a pass on 2020 due to the global pandemic. Not a single dust up about Memorial Day Weekend.
Our holiday is Independence Day. We host a BBQ for family, extended family and even friends of extended family each year since 2015. They’ve been invited each and every year even last year when we decided to keep it extremely small. The list was tiny compared to previous years due to restrictions on gatherings and those invited were folks we trusted. No one contracted COVID.
We (husband, sons, daughter-in-law and me) figure that this year’s kerfuffle is all due to brisket. I guess they felt they should have been invited for brisket. They never called to ask if we were doing anything that weekend. Nope, it all came down to brisket on Instagram. This is why I despise social media. Part of me wanted to delete my Insta account but I’m not going to do that, yet. There are a lot of paper artists that I follow as well as a lot of BBQ enthusiasts.
I know you’re wondering how we intend to handle it all.
There’s nothing to handle when you think about it. Yeah, there were passive-aggressive texts thrown our way but honestly this is their problem. They’re offended for absolutely no reason and we’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. So why write about it? My blog is about my daily life. Life gets weird and messy at times. I’m not one to throw glitter and fake smiles around. I’m a very WYSIWYG kinda’ gal. That’s “what you see is what you get” for those too young to recognize the acronym.
Wrapping this extremely overdue post to dive into some BBQ pork tenderloin.
Peace
