Welcome to Memorial Day Weekend
Okay so we’re officially into the second day of our four day weekend. Yes, four days. The man of the house is taking an extra day off at my request. There’s no special reason, I just wanted more days for gaming, movie watching and yard work. It’s currently 62° as I write this morning and there’s a nice breeze but you can feel the humidity rising even at 7am.
Every year since we bought the house, I promise to not bug my husband about opening the pool. Every year since we bought the house that promise gets broken. By Memorial Day weekend I’m anxious to get it opened so I can swim. My muscles and bones crave it after winter. As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, the pool isn’t heated. Hubs feels that we shouldn’t open the pool until the water temperature is at least 72°. This still makes me laugh. I grew up swimming in the ocean with temps at 65°. Chilly? Yes, a bit but oh so refreshing on a hot day. There’s nothing better than getting yard work done and jumping into the pool to cool off.
We don’t have anything planned for the weekend. I don’t normally host a BBQ for this holiday. I am smoking a pork butt on Monday to make pulled pork. We’ll have some tomorrow but most of it is heading to the freezer. I have a goal to get a bunch of freezer friendly meals prepared so that I don’t have to cook as much throughout the summer. Less time cooking and more time lounging in the pool keeps this gal happy.
The boys are coming over later today to play Magic the Gathering with us. It’s been a couple months since we played together. Number 2 hasn’t been extremely busy at work but he’s been very busy starting up a side business this year. He and his wife have gone into the bounce house/water slide rental business. Number 1 has been busy with work and has a pretty busy social calendar. He DMs a Dungeons & Dragons campaign each week and gets together frequently with his circles of friends. Number 3 has been pounding the overtime at work because he’s saving money for a new car and wants a big down payment.

Over the years memorials and holidays have become better known as “three day weekends” with many folks failing to acknowledge the reason behind their break. Our county remains dedicated to hosting memorial services at the Veteran’s cemetery and the Revolutionary War cemetery. Our town has its annual Memorial Day parade and service at the monument on our high school grounds. Many residents decorate their homes and lawns with flags to show respect and honor those who have died in service to this country.
I won’t get into current politics or the social upheaval going on in this country. It breaks my heart. I take all my concerns, worries and hopes to God in prayer. I am still proud to be American, very proud of the small town where I live and have the utmost respect for the men and women who have fallen as well as those who serve in our military today.
For those who have wandered to my blog, thanks for hanging out and reading my ramblings. I pray that everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend.
Peace,
Nim
